Pupils and staff at Keresley Newland Primary Academy celebrated ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ on Friday 26th May, giving every swashbuckler and hornswaggler the opportunity to grab an eyepatch, stuff a parrot on their shoulder and yell, “Arrrr!” at the most unsuspecting, lily-livered of pals.
Executive Headteacher, Mrs Hims, opened celebration assembly with a rousing, ‘Ahoy me Hearties!’ to which children responded with ‘Ahoy, Mistress ‘ims!’. Children of all ages dressed up as pirates and awards were given out in assembly for the ‘best dressed’, ‘most authentic’ and ‘most creative’ pirates! Winners included one of our youngest Nursery pupils, Keira and also Dominic, a Year 6 pupil and Corley in Year 3. Staff awards went to Mrs Robertson, Miss Flavell and Miss Pannell too!
Throughout the day, children have used the pirate theme to support their learning. Year 4 children used co-ordinates to ‘search for islands’ in Mathematics and Year 1 children put their creative skills to the test in designing a pirate flag. Children in Foundation Stage thoroughly enjoyed their outdoor learning today, in brilliant sunshine, role-playing shipwrecks and shanty songs!
The team of staff at County Caterers prepared a delicious school lunch featuring Captain B’s fish fillet fingers from the cold Alaskan Sea and the lunch tables were decorated with piece of eight and giant lobsters!
What a wonderful way to end the first half of the summer term!
